Gear

Many people who view an amazing image often first ask, what equipment was used to take this picture? I know I certainly did. They think that if only they had the same equipment, they would be able to take a similar image. If only that were true in all cases. There are many articles on the web on this very topic with many varying opinions.

In general, it is the the photographer who makes the image, but gear does matter for certain types of photography - or at least, to an extent. For example, you can get an incredible image of a bird in flight without the latest eye tracking technology and super fast shutter speeds, however, the better the tool the easier it will be to obtain a higher keeper rate (aka number of sharp photos).

I have used many types of cameras and many different brands over the years and they all have had their pros and cons. It’s really about having the right equipment for the particular subject(s) you are photographing.

I recently switched to Sony because it seemed to be the best choice for the type of photography that I like to do and how I like to do it. There are no right or wrong choices. Just do what works for you. There are just too many variables to consider.

The most important thing to do is just get out there and take pictures and enjoy the process.

Happy picture taking!
